The Parish Council is responsible for all streetlighting in the village, apart from those on the A21 (which belong to National Highways). They are provided for amenity and convenience (not highway safety) so do not necessarily all meet the specifications (height, distance between etc.) required for dedicated highway lighting.
The lighting on the main ‘arterial’ streets in the village, so Station Road and from bypass to bypass – George Hill, High Street, The Clappers, Northbridge Street, stay on all night. Brightling Road and all side roads and residential areas go off around midnight (1am BST) and, if still dark, come on again at 5.30am until daybreak.
Many of the columns in the centre of the village have been fitted with sockets to display Christmas motifs – approximately a dozen are put up each year in time for Christmas Capers.
In November 2022 the Council was given approval to borrow £44,000 to upgrade all streetlights in the parish to LED. A loan from the Public Works Loan Board was subsequently received in January 2023 and the lights were all changed to Led. The aim of the upgrades was to make the lighting more environmentally friendly, with less light pollution, less maintenance and substantially reduced power consumption. This also provided significant cost savings.
We use a contractor to maintain the lights so if you notice any issues please Contact the Council.
